A new pattern has been released on the website - the Athena Colour Blocked Pencil skirt. Named after the Greek Goddess of handicrafts, it is a really versatile pattern that can be dressed up or down to suit any occasion. It has lots of colour blocking options or can be made as a simple, classic pencil skirt.
The skirt is designed for stable knit fabrics such as scuba, ponte, stretch crepe, cotton lycra etc. and the colour blocking options are perfect for using up scraps.
Simple Skirt
The classic pencil skirt never goes out of style and can be worn for so many different occasions, from a day at the office to a night on the town. Our testers made some beautiful skirts and styled them in so many different ways.
Jenny M made a classic black pencil skirt while Jenny S added a splash of colour with a funky patterned cotton Lycra and Kerri made a gorgeous smart-casual look in stretch Jacquard jersey.
2 Panel Colour Block
The first of many colour blocking options is the 2 panel skirt. This is great for creating a two tone effect skirt using complementary or contrasting colours. I used black and burgundy Ponte fabric for my knee length skirt, while our tester Jade used a black Ponte and black stretch velvet for a twist on the classic black skirt.
3 Panel Colour Block
The 3 three panel skirt is great for using up scraps. You can be really creative with it and mix colours and plains and patterns to create a really unique skirt. Kath made a beautiful skirt using black ponte for the side panels and stretch velvet for the middle. Steph made a lovely midi length skirt using plain and pattern ponte and Jennifer added a touch of sparkle by using a sequin centre panel between two panels of floral Liverpool fabric.
Patchwork Panel
The patchwork option is the ultimate scrap buster. You can really let your imagination go wild creating something really unique. You can use the patchwork pattern pieces that are included in the pattern or make up your own patchwork design, then use the pattern piece for the centre panel to cut it out. I made the black and red one using the pattern pieces. I used up lots of scraps of scuba, ponte, and jersey, with black ponte for the side panels. The pink and purple one is my own patchwork design. I combined different colours and patterns to create something really bright and colourful.
Other Options
The Athena skirt has all sorts of other options too including 3 lengths, 2 waistband options and an optional back or side split. Heidi and Maria both put a split in the front of the skirt between the front and side panels, I placed a split in the back of my scuba midi length skirt and Jenny S put a side split in her gorgeous denim-look cotton lycra skirt.
So whatever your style or taste, the Athena Pencil Skirt has something to offer! Whether you want a classic black skirt or a one of a kind unique skirt, this pattern has it all. It is available to download from the website in A4, A0, US Letter and Projector Formats.
